The Cultural Wing of Student Life Committee (SLC) organised International Mother Language Day Celebrations on 21 February with talks by Dr. Madri Kakoti, Department of Linguistics, University of Lucknow on Language and Society: Reflections of Reality and Dr. A Giridhar Rao, Azim Premji University, Bengaluru on Biocultural Diversity, Linguistic Human Rights, and Mother-Tongue Medium Education. This was followed by events by The Language Club of IIIT Hyderabad.
Campus Life Council organised Saraswati Puja/Basant Panchami was celebrated on 2 February at Bakul Warehouse. This auspicious occasion embraces the arrival of Maa Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, learning, music, art and wisdom. Students, faculty, staff, and their family members participated in the festivities. After the puja a special lunch was organised for all the devotees.
IIITH celebrated India’s 76th Republic Day on 26 January at the Football Grounds. Celebrations began with a welcome address by the Chair-SLC; march past by students and security guards; hoisting of the national flag by Prof. P J Narayanan and singing of the national anthem. This was followed by the Director’s address, Registrar’s address and speeches by Student Parliament general secretary and speaker; and cultural programs – Songs of Renaissance by Ruhani Sangat, The Musical Research Scholars Group from University of Hyderabad (UoH); IIIT student clubs and cultural council; and faculty and staff kids. The programme concluded with distribution of refreshments to all present.
Campus Life Council organised Saraswati Puja/Basant Panchami on 14 and 15 February 2024 at Bakul Warehouse. Basant Panchami’s main puja began on 14 February morning which was followed by pushpanjali. In the evening there was sandhya aarti followed by cultural programmes. The puja concluded on the morning of 15 February with visarjan puja, followed by dadhikarma.
IIITH celebrated India’s 75th Republic Day on 26 January 2024 at the institute football ground. Celebrations began with a welcome address by the Prof Tapan Kumar Sau, Chair-SLC, then a march past by students and security guards, after which Prof. P J Narayanan hoisted the national flag with the entire football ground reverberating with the national anthem. This was followed by his address; registrar’s address; speeches from student parliament general secretary & speaker; cultural programmes by students, faculty and staff kids. NSS IIIT Hyderabad organised a blood donation camp on campus with the help of Osmania General Hospitals.

Anis Fatema, PhD student of Dr. Aftab M Hussain won second prize in Young Professionals (YP) session and another second prize in the Student Research Forum Award for Fabrication of Flexible Pressure Sensor Systems for Biomedical Applications at the IEEE APSCON 2024. Both awards carry significant cash prizes and a certificate.































































Kumar Neelabh, working under the supervision of Dr. Vishnu Sreekumar, has been selected for the Mathematical Methods in Computational Neuroscience Summer School to be held at Eresfjord, Norway from 20 July to 5 August organised by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The competitive selection process for 25 seats was based partly on a summary of his ongoing master’s thesis which aims to describe and understand neural trajectories on low-dimensional manifolds during human learning.

Pranay Gupta and Debtanu Gupta under the mentorship of Dr. Ravi Kiran Sarvadevabhatla were super winners of this year’s edition of the prestigious Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship (QIF) award for their innovative proposal – Deep Neural Models for Generalized Synthesis of Multi-avatar Actions in the domain of Multimedia Computing. Harshithanjani Athi and Rasagna Chigullapally under the mentorship of Dr. Lalitha Vadlamani and Dr. Prasad Krishnan were winners of this year’s edition of the prestigious Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship (QIF) award for their innovative proposal – List Decoding Reed-Solomon and Locally Repairable Codes: How far can we go? in the domain of Advances in Communication Techniques and Theory.

Team Lumos, Robotics Research Center (RRC) secured 3rd place at an international robotics competition organized by IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA 2022) held from 23 – 27 May at Philadelphia.

Team Cerebrus, Robotics Research Center (RRC) secured second place at the ARTPARK Robotics Challenge conducted by IISc Bangalore’s Innovation Hub.

Research work on Bringing Linearly Transformed Cosines to Anisotropic GGX by Aakash K T under the supervision of Prof. P J Narayanan received the best paper award at ACM SIGGRAPH Symposium on Interactive 3D Graphics and Games (I3D), 2022.

Adithya Sunil Edakkadan working under the supervision of Dr. Abhishek Srivastava has been selected for the Chanakya Undergraduate Fellowship in Quantum Technologies by the I-Hub Quantum Technology foundation at IISER Pune.

Prof. R Pradeep Kumar’s external student, Mangesh Shendkar from IIT BHU received the best paper award for his work on Response reduction factor of RC-infilled frames by using different methods by the Indian Concrete Institute (ICI) Journal.

Team PauliZ with team members Alapan Chaudhuri, (CSD UG3); Kushagra Garg, (CND UG3); Rutvij Menavlikar, (CSD UG3); Shreyas Pradhanm (CND UG3) and Zeeshan Ahmed, (CSD UG3) secured first place in Quantum Chemistry Challenge of QHack 2022 conducted from 14 – 25 February. The team won two spots for one month summer internships in Tokyo with QunaSys.

Rishikesh Bose, MS 1st year; Ayush Kumar Lall, 3rd year Dual Degree; Nilesh Bawankar, MS 1st year and Ansh Khandelwal, 3rd Year BTech Honors won the water challenge hackathon conducted by Smart City Living Lab with Govt. of Telangana.

Sarvesh Thakur pursuing Ph.D in CSE under the supervision of Prof. Madhava Krishna had been awarded the prestigious Kohli Research Fellowship Program, a competitive Fellowship program for pursuing Ph.D at the Kohli Center on Intelligent Systems (KCIS) at International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIITH).

Avantika Latwal working under the supervision of Dr. Rehana Shaik was awarded second prize under the theme Geospatial Technologies in Water Resources Engineering for research work on Water Quality Estimation Using Remote Sensing Technique: A case study of Bhadra Reservoir, Karnataka at the 26th International Conference on Hydraulics, Water Resources and Coastal Engineering (HYDRO-2021 International) Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) Surat, Gujarat from 23 – 25 December.

An extensive article by Rishabh B Mishra, Center for VLSI and Embedded Systems Technology (CVEST) on Solar Powered Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: A Review was published in the journal – Energy Technology and also got accepted as the cover article of the journal which reflects that the topic which was covered is highly interesting to editors of the journal and it’s quite unique as well.

A team of 8 students – Aditya Kadam (UG3, Anmol Goel (RA), Jivitesh Jain (UG4), Mallika Subramanian (UG4), Manvith Reddy (UG4), Prashant Kodali (Ph.D), Arjun T H (UG3), Jushaan Singh Kalra (UG4, Delhi Technological University) and faculty members Prof. Ponnurangam Kumaraguru and Prof. Manish Shrivastava from Precog IIITH participated in the Hate Speech and Offensive Content Identification in English and Indo-Aryan Languages (HASOC-2021) shared task as a part of the CEUR workshop organized by FIRE 2021 from 13 – 17 December.

Research work on Classroom Slide Narration System by Jobin K V Ajoy Mondal working under the supervision of Prof. C V Jawahar won the IAPR best paper award at the 6th IAPR International Conference on Computer Vision & Image Processing held at IIT Roper in a Hybrid mode from 3 – 5 December.

An international oneM2M hackathon organised by Korea Electronics Technology Institute to commemorate its 30th anniversary saw IIITH walk away with the Best User Application award.

Prof. Ponnurangam Kumaraguru and his students received the best student paper award for their research work on What’s Kooking? Characterizing India’s Emerging Social Network, Koo at the 2021 IEEE/ACM International Conference on Advances in Social Networks Analysis and Mining (ASONAM-21) held virtually on ZOOM from 8 – 11 November.

Salma Khan, a Ph.D student working under the supervision of Dr. Syed Azeemuddin received the best student paper presentation award at Asia Pacific Conference on Circuits and Systems (APCCAS-2021) for her research work on High-Speed CMOS Ramp Generator using Proteretic Comparator held in hybrid mode from 22 – 26 November from Malaysia.

Research work on A BIM Based Approach of Electrical Network Analysis and Applications Using GIS Tools by Prof. K S Rajan, Dr. Nagaraja Ravoori Tejaswini Venkumahanti, Kesava Rao Pyla and Sinha S K was given Best Paper Award at 2nd International virtual conference on Sustainable Construction Technologies and Advancements in Civil Engineering (ScTACE 2021), Bhimavaram from 14 – 16 October.

IIIT team tesla_protocol ranked 46 at the ACM-ICPC competition for 2020. tesla_protocol, made up of Sai Anirudh Peduri, Arjun Pitchanathan and Devansh Gautam was ahead of teams from Stanford, Virginia Tech, Purdue, etc.

Prof. C V Jawahar and his students Sanjana Gunna and Rohit Saluja were awarded the Best Paper Award for their paper on Transfer Learning for Scene Text Recognition in Indian Languages at the ICDAR 2021 workshop on camera-based document analysis and recognition (CBDAR 2021, 9th edition) in Lausanne, Switzerland from 5 – 10 September.

Jhansi Mallela (Ph.D – ECE) working under the supervision of Dr. Chiranjeevi Yarra and Ruthwik Muppala (Ph.D – ECE) working under the supervision of Dr. Aftab M Hussain were awarded the prestigious Kohli Research Fellowship for the academic year 2021 – 2022.

Manisha Padala and Sankrshan Damle, Ph.D students working under the guidance of Dr. Sujit Gujar received Best Paper Award at the first Indian conference on (DAI) organized by Robert Bosch Center for Data Science and AI, IIT Madras from 16 – 18 June for their work on Building Ethical AI: Federated Learning Meets Fairness and Differential Privacy. Manisha Padala and Sankrshan Damle were given a cash prize of USD 500.

Research work by Aditya Srinivas Gear, Kritika Prakash, Nonidh Singh and Dr Praveen Paruchuri on PredictRV: A Prediction Based Strategy for Negotiations with Dynamically Changing Reservation Value has been accepted and also has been nominated for the best student paper at GDN 2021.

D Durga Prasad a part time PhD student of Dr. K S Rajan was awarded best paper award for his research work on Geospatial Object Detection using Machine Learning Aviation Case Study at ICNS-202 on Artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) for aviation applications.

Shweta Kumari, Ph.D student, Center for Computational Natural Sciences and Bioinformatics (CCNSB) and Abishek Bharadhwaj, Ph.D student of CCMB Hyderabad won the best poster award for their research work on Structural modulation in Smoothened (SMO) upon cholesterol binding at the second edition of student-driven conference Hy-Sci 2020 held virtually from 17 – 18 December.

In a global event conducted jointly by the University of Helsinki and Slush to tackle the growing urban air pollution crisis, a IIITH team of students made the jury’s cut and featured among the 8 shortlisted teams.

A team comprising Adhithya Arun and Meher Shashwat Nigam, 4th year BTech students, along with few others walked away with the second place in the 3rd edition of the virtual Blockchain and Data Science hackathon event that was conducted from 9 – 11 October 2020.

M.Tech CSE students Shanu Gandhi, Shreyas Nagraj, Upinder Singh and Manik Gupta, B.Tech CSE student Vijayraj S. and dual degree student Pradeep P. won the hackathon Payments and Pandemic in category Best Use of Visa API, conducted during their virtual summer internship at VISA. Over 50 teams of interns participated from India and around the world in teams of 4-6 size and IIITH was among the 6 winning teams and only team from India to win.

tesla_protocol, made up of Sai Anurudh Peduri, Arjun Pitchanathan and Devansh Gautam, has qualified for the Association for Computing Machinery – International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM ICPC) world finals.

IIIT Hyderabad team – The Third I won a hackathon on IoT for Smart City on 11 January at Panaji. The team proposed a low cost IoT solution for indoor pollution monitoring. A prize is a fully paid trip by EU to attend a leading startup event in Europe.

Prof. Ponnurangam Kumaraguru has been awarded the Flipkart Faculty Award for his work on security. The award includes a cash grant which he is utilizing for further research on fraud detection along with some of his students.

Dr. Nazia Akhtar received a special commendation from the jury of the Jawad Memorial Prize for Urdu-English Translation. Nazia translated the Urdu short story Chhottam Jaan written by Zeenath Sajida. In 2017, Nazia was awarded a New India Foundation fellowship to write a book on Urdu prose by Hyderabadi women.

Prof. Ponnurangam Kumaraguru has been named a Distinguished Member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world’s largest and most prestigious society of computing professionals.

The selection of paper as one of the top contributions is usually equivalent to the Best Paper Award. The authors were not allowed to participate in the best paper award category as all the authors were professors.

Dr. Raghu Reddy and his students Neeraj Mathur and Sai Anirudh Karre have been granted a U.S Patent for their research work on System and method for evaluating and facilitating customized guidelines using usability code pattern analysis.

Dr. Chiranjeevi Yarra has been awarded with Prof. D J Badkas Medal for the academic year 2019 – 2020 by the council of the institute for his best performance in Ph.D at IISc Bangalore during the online convocation held on 6 October.

Prof. Ponnurangam Kumara guru has been inducted into the Academic Council (aka Senate, highest academic body of an institution) of The LNM Institute of Information Technology (LNMIIT).

Prof. Deva Priyakumar received the Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI) Bronze Medal from the president of CSRI at the 27th CRSI National Symposium in Chemistry organized by Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata from 26 – 30 September. He received this award for his significant contributions in computational chemistry to study reaction mechanisms and biological interactions.

Dr. Ashok Kumar Das is in the 10,000 Club of Google Scholar Citations. His Google Scholar h-index is 59 and i10-index is 171 with over 10,000 citations. Dr. Das has also been included in the top 2% of scientists world-wide in all fields and in the area of Networking & Telecommunications he has been ranked 321 in the world subject area for the year 2021. The ranking is based on an independent study done by the Stanford University, USA.

Dr. Nimmi Rangaswamy has been invited to join the Editorial Board of the journal Communication, Culture and Critique. Published by the International Communication Association (ICA) and Oxford University Press, Communication, Culture and Critique (CCC) is devoted to critical scholarship on communication, media, and cultural studies.

Prof. P Krishna Reddy has been appointed as a member of jury committee, CSI SIG eGovernance Awards 2021.

Dr. P Pravin Kumar Venkat Rao was awarded the Young Engineer of the Year Award-2021 by Institution of Engineers (India) on 15 September.

Prof. Pradeep Kumar Ramancharla has been appointed as a member of the Bridge Specifications and Standards Committee (BSSC) of the Indian Road Congress.

Prof. Vishal Garg has been elected as a member of the executive council of Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE), one of the leading organizations in India that works on creating awareness about energy efficiency as a resource.

Dr. P Pravin Kumar Venkat Rao, has been elected as a Member of the Indian Association of Structural Engineers (IAStructE).

Dr. Das has also been included in the top 2% of scientists world-wide in all fields and in the area of Networking & Telecommunications he has been ranked 321 in the world subject area for the year 2021. The ranking is based on an independent study done by the Stanford University, USA.

Dr. Vinoo Alluri’s student Arun Garimella’s research on Marijuana and the Hippocampus: A Longitudinal Study on the effects of Marijuana on Hippocampal Subfields has been accepted in international journal Progress in Neuropsychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry. Co-authors of the work include Sourabh Rajguru, Umesh Singla and Prof. Vinoo Alluri.

Dr. Radhika Mamidi and her student Kartikey Pant (5th year CLD) received Best System Paper Award for their research work on BERT-based Ensembles for Modeling Disclosure and Support in Conversational Social Media Text at Affective Content Analysis workshop in the 34th AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence at New York on 7 February.
