MS BY RESEARCH STUDENT AMBIKA SHAHU PRESENTED 2 PAPERS AT INTERACT 2017

Ambika presented two papers as first and second author at INTERACT 2017, the 16th IFIP TC.13 International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction at IIT-Bombay. The project was under the supervision of Dr. Priyanka Srivastava from Perception and Cognition Group, Cognitive Science (CogSci) Lab, KCIS, IIIT-H.

The two papers were from only seven accepted peer reviewed articles at the ‘student research consortium’ at INTERACT. The studies (“How useful is 360-degree view for Cognitive Mapping” and “Three Sixty Degree Vision Interfaces: Evaluation of Performance and Eye Movements”) evaluate the effect of 360-degree display designs on remote sense of space. The conference was an excellent platform for Ambika to interact with pioneers in HCI and get their views about her research.

These studies were supported by the grants from Cognitive Science Research Initiative, Department of Science and Technology (CSRI, DST) and Institute of Nuclear Medical and Allied Sciences, Defence Research and Development Organization (INMAS, DRDO ).

Dr. Priyanka Srivastava

is studying how do we perceive and construct reality. More specifically, how our ability to perceive and think interacts with emerging technologies like virtual environment (VE), virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR)

and how VR can enable us to understand adaptability, embodiment, and sense of presence experiences? Her current work bridges the gap between cognition and human-factors/ HCI, by developing human-centered designs for VE and VR. She employs the current state-of-the-art technologies like ‘FOVE -VR’ (VR with eye-tracking) and ‘Oculus Rift’, ‘SR 1000 plus’ Eye-tracking, and ‘BioNomadix’ to study the aforementioned research interests. She has delivered several talks and hosted a Human Factors symposium this semester:

• Talk at European Society for Cognitive Psychology, Germany, 2017
• Talk at Indian Academy of Neuroscience, India, 2017
• Organized a “Human Factor Symposium” at Association for Cognitive Science (ACCS), India, 2017
• Was invited as a session chair at Annual Meets on Human Factors and Ergonomic Society (HFES), US, 2017
