Nokia India R&D's Cloud Computing Group, led by its director Mr. Chidambaran (Chid) Kollengode, has donated seven high configuration Rack Servers to IIIT-H's Search and Information Extraction Lab (SIEL).

Each server features an Intel Xeon 3.1 GHz Quad-core processor, 1-TB hard disk drive, and 8-GB DDR3 RAM.

SIEL, under the guidance of its head Prof. Vasudeva Varma, is now working on integrating the rack servers with IIIT-H's cloud computing infrastructure and creating a unified interface for effective use of the integrated infrastructure for carrying out research in search technologies (including crawling) and processing of large scale unstructured data.

“It has been a privilege to be associated with Prof. Vasudeva Varma, whose lab at IIIT-H has been carrying out cutting edge research in areas highly relevant to our work at Nokia R&D. The grant is acknowledgment of our mutual trust in what we can together achieve with the brightest minds from premier research labs. We look forward to exploiting a lot of innovative ideas that Prof. Vasu and his team at SIEL are now poised to generate in this exciting area of cloud computing,” said Mr. Chidambaran, Director, Nokia India R&D's Cloud Computing Group.

While Nokia R&D's support represents recognition of SIEL's leading edge research initiatives and the transformational IE technologies it has created, the support will help boost SIEL's research efforts toward cloud computing.

"The newest addition to SIEL's cloud infrastructure will enable our researchers to perform, with much ease and in much faster time cycles, highly complex computations such as social media analytics, multi-document summarization, and crawling. We are very thankful to Nokia R&D, and, particularly to Chid, for such generous support," said Prof. Vasudeva Varma.

"IIIT-H works very closely with research groups in industry to have the opportunity to create and innovate solutions for real world challenges. Collaboration with Nokia India R&D is important to us, for it helps IIIT-H faculty and students gain first hand exposure and insights into technology problems facing industry. We look forward to many more such mutually beneficial collaborations with industry," said Prof. PJ Narayanan, Dean (R&D) and Head, Industry Outreach, IIIT-H.

About SIEL
As part of the Language Technologies Research Center (LTRC) at IIIT-H, Search and Information Extraction Lab (SIEL) focuses on solving research problems in the areas of Information Retrieval (IR), Extraction (IE) and Access (IA). SIEL is currently working on the following broad application areas: Cross Language Information Access (CLIA), Cloud Computing, Computational Advertising, Enterprise Search, IE & NER, Personalization, Question and Answering, Rich Media Search, and Summarization.
Below are some of SIEL's global achievements.
On March 1, 2012, an MS by Research student from SIEL, Dharmesh Kakadia, was awarded the First Prize at the Unysis held Cloud 20/20, one of India's largest technical paper contests in cloud computing.
About Nokia India R&D
Bengaluru is one of the few Nokia locations where Markets team sit alongside the Location & Commerce and MP Services R&D teams. This site sees a lot of action all year through, be it product launches like that of Dual Sim devices C2-00 and X1-01 or the cool Nokia Money proto testing. And for the more tech savvy ones, Nokia India R&D often conducts programs like Innovation workshops and Idea Championship, where one can demonstrate one's latest ideas.
