Dr. Tanmay Bhowmik is a young academic researcher with interests mainly in emerging research areas such as Nanophotonics, Metamaterials, Heterogeneous Photonics–Electronics Integration, Semiconductor Optoelectronics, Integrated Silicon Photonics, and Light–Matter Interactions at the Nanoscale. Hailing from a small town in the hilly state of Tripura, in the remote northeastern part of India, he developed a strong motivation to pursue higher education and research at the national and international levels.
He joined the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, India, as a full-time Ph.D. Scholar in July 2018. He also had predoctoral research experience in underwater optical communication while working as a Project Associate at IIT Madras. He submitted his doctoral thesis in August 2024 and moved to Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, where he served as a postdoctoral research fellow on nanophotonics & advanced microscopy until March 2026.
He was awarded with the Best PhD Thesis Medal (IIT Guwahati) for his research work on “Harnessing Epsilon-Near-Zero (ENZ) effect in Nanophotonic Metamaterials for Modulation of Optical Intensity and Polarization”. To date, he has published 14 research articles (8 as the first author) in prestigious peer-reviewed SCI journals, holds 1 granted Indian PATENT, and has contributed to more than 15 international conferences.
In June 2026, he moved to India, joining the Center for VLSI and Embedded Systems Technology (CVEST) at IIIT Hyderabad as an Assistant Professor.
