Talented and motivated individuals may apply for admission into the full-time or part-time post-graduate programmes (MTech/MS/PhD) at IIIT, Hyderabad through the Standing Admissions Comittee. The committee accepts applications from working professionals, recently graduated students with a consistent and excellent academic record, and students already studying at IIIT, Hyderabad who opt for higher studies.
The basic eligibility criteria and curricula of various programmes for standing committee admission is the same as that for the regular PG admission. Candidates who do not satisfy the high standards set for standing admissions may apply for post-graduate programmes through the regular PG admissions.
The standing committee processes various categories of applications:
Admission into Research Programmes (MS/PhD)
Applicants must have a consistent and excellent academic record and/or demonstrable research skills by way of good-quality publications or research-oriented projects. Typically, the candidate is expected to satisfy one or more of the following:
- Consistent & excellent academic record with a rank.
- Good publication especially in a reputed conference or journal.
- Working in an R&D organization / institute with at least 3 years of experience and good recommendation.
- Prior working experience with a faculty member of IIIT, Hyderabad, along with a recommendation from the faculty member with willingness to act as an advisor and fund the student.
Candidates must submit applications consisting of a resume and recommendation letters. Applications may be submitted at any time of the year by email. Applicants may be called for interview if deemed necessary by the committee. The submitted resume must contain the following:
- Area of interest and Statement of purpose.
- Publications, if any
- Research-oriented / innovative projects, if any
- Academic record from class 10 onwards
- Contact details
- Any other information that the candidate thinks relevant
Recommendation letters are given weight when they are from trusted sources. Worthy candidates who are ready to do research may be admitted even during the middle of a semester. Course requirements can be met from the next semester onwards.
External PhD Programme
Highly motivated individuals who have established external advisors may apply for the External PhD programme in order to enroll for PhD at IIIT, Hyderabad. They may carry out the main part of their research from their home institute / organization. However, they are required to spend their first semester for course work at IIIT, Hyderabad, and again for a semester later while carrying out their research.
Applications for External PhD may be submitted at any time of the year by email. Applicants may be called for interview if deemed necessary by the committee. The submitted application must satisfy all the requirements described above under "Admission into Research Programmes (MS/PhD)". In addition, the application must also contain the credentials / resume of the external advisor.
Part-time Programmes & PGSSP (For Working Professionals in Hyderabad)
Professionals in the Hyderabad area are encouraged to enroll in the PG programmes on a part-time basis. They are recommended to initially join through our PG Student Status Programme (PGSSP). PGSSP allows professionals to take individual courses of their interest without needing to enroll in a degree programme. This is suitable for professionals interested in acquiring new knowledge in chosen areas without regard to any degree. Students awarded the PGSSP status can take a maximum of two courses each semester.
If they choose, based on their performance in the courses, professionals may be formally admitted into a part-time (or full-time) degree programme. For this, the candidate must apply to the Standing Committee after successful completion of courses. Applications may be submitted via email. The courses taken under the PGSSP scheme will then count towards the formal degree.
In case the candidate is interested in part-time research programmes (MS or PhD), they should additionally meet relevant faculty members and discuss their research plans and/or do a project with them. A letter of recommendation from the concerned faculty member (prospective advisor) will be required.
