Thesis - Mitigating Denial of Service attacks
The internet usage has increased in all fields of the globe and new nodes are coming at a high rate. The network administrators are not able to provide the required resources like computation power and bandwidth needed for providing quality service to the users. The inabilities to provide enough resources to hosts is exploited by the attackers and are using Denial of Service (DoS) or Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks more than any other tool to bring down the systems. Hence, mitigation of DoS attacks have becomes the focal point in the area of security research. We have identified the two techniques IP Spoofing and Botnets, which are responsible for making these attacks effective. We aim to develop the solutions to mitigate each of these techniques. -
Defense Against IP spoofing
The DoS attackers are able to maintaining anonymity because of usage of IP spoofing. To build a system which can sheild against DoS attacks, IP Spoofing should be taken care of. In this project, we developed a scheme which can filter the spoofed packets based on Hop Count metric of the packets. The quality of service is improved and number of false positives are reduced when this scheme is implemented. -
Mitigating Denial of Service attacks caused by social networking sites
Another technique through which DoS attacks are effective is due to the presence of bots. The increased activity on social networking websites attracted the DoS attackers and the attackers are using social networking sites to generate botnets. We propose a solution to stop this bots recruitment problem with the help of browser plugins. Experiments are conducted in facebook environment. -
Static Code Analysis
This project focuses on providing experience in analyzing the code and coming up with it's behavior or signature. Initially, a set of training codes are given and we have to match the new executable with the one in training set which matches the most. This is similar to detection of viruses using signatures but at the basic level. Next, we dealt with patching the simple programs and cracking the passwords from the object code. Tools used: IDA pro.
