International Institute of Information Technology-Hyderabad (IIIT-H) was set up as a research university focused on the core areas of Information Technology, such as Computer Science, Electronics and Communications, and their applications in other domains. The institute evolved strong research programmes in a host of areas, with computation or IT providing the connecting thread, and with an emphasis on the development of technology and applications, which can be transferred for use to industry and society. This required carrying out basic research that can be used to solve real life problems. As a result, a synergistic relationship has come to exist at the Institute between basic and applied research. Faculty carries out a number of academic industrial projects, and a few companies have been incubated based on the research done at the Institute.
PhD Programme
PhD is a research programme whose centerpiece is the dissertation. The course work and the qualifiers are there to ensure the necessary breadth in the areas for the student. The semester-wise courses and the planning of PhD study is dependent on the students background.
A PhD student takes the relevant courses in the first one or two semesters, depending on the background, just like a student of MS by research. After the first year, the student works on clearing the PhD qualifying exam which tests his or her breadth of knowledge in the field of study. This is followed by the PhD proposal defense where the depth of the knowledge of the student in his field of dissertation is tested. The PhD is awarded on completion of thesis followed by successful thesis defense. Research Exchange Programme allows a PhD student to spend time abroad.
MS by Research (Dual Degree)
The 5-year Dual Degree Programs cater to growing need for exceptionally trained people in India and abroad. The student in this program may pursue a stream area, such as, language technologies, visual information systems, data engineering, wireless communications, VLSI and embedded systems, and algorithms and complexity theory. These students take advanced courses in a stream area along with projects during the first four years. In the last year they work on the Master's Thesis.
Dual Degree option enables students to acquire two degrees – B Tech (Hons) and MS by Research by successfully defending MS thesis.
MS by Research (PG)
This is a research-oriented postgraduate programme. The students can take advanced courses related to their area of specialization in the first year and devote the second year entirely towards their research thesis. Exceptionally well prepared students can directly start working on their research thesis in the first year, if they have the necessary background, and complete it in one and half year.
