Programs Offered

The Institute selects students for the Postgraduate Programmes based on an all India entrance examination conducted by IIIT in several major cities in the country in March-May and the application deadline is in January-February. Applications for the research programmes are considered round the year. The following is the list of programmes running in the VLSI and Embedded systems department of the Institute at present.

Masters in Technology (M.Tech.) in VLSI & Embedded Systems

This is a 2-year graduate program which involves three semesters of intense coursework and a final semester project, either in the institute or as an internship at leading VLSI companies, making it a job-centric program. The courses taken by students include VLSI Dsign, Advanced Digital Design and HDL, Analog & Mixed Signal Design, Advanced Computer Architecture, VLSI Algorithms, Embedded Systems, CMOS RFIC Design, and other electives offered by the Institute.

Masters in Science by Research (M.S. by Research) in VLSI & Embedded Systems

This is a research-oriented graduate program. The students have to take advanced courses related to their area of specialization in the first year and devote the second year entirely towards their research thesis. Exceptionally well prepared students can directly start working on their research thesis in the first year, if they have the necessary background, and complete it in one and half year. The students graduate on successfully defending their thesis, in addition to satisfying coursework requirements.

Ph.D. in VLSI & Embedded Systems

  • Regular PhD Programme
Ph.D. is a research program whose centerpiece is the dissertation. The course work and the qualifiers are there to ensure the necessary breadth in the areas for the student. The semester-wise courses and the planning of Ph.D. study are dependent on the student's background. A Ph.D. student takes the relevant courses in one or two semesters, depending on the background, just like a student of M.S. by research. After the first year, the student works on clearing the Ph.D. qualifying exam which tests his or her breadth of knowledge in the field of study. This is followed by the Ph.D. proposal defense where the depth of the knowledge of the student in his field of dissertation is tested. Then Ph.D. is awarded on completion of thesis followed by successful thesis defense. Research Exchange Programs allows a PhD student to spend time abroad.

  • External PhD Programme
This program allows out-of-station candidates to enroll for PhD and carry out the main part of their research from their home institute. They are required to spend their first semester for course work in the institute, and again for a semester later while carrying out their research.

  • Research Exchange Program
The Institute has extremely ambitious programs for the creation of the next generation of researchers, faculty members and innovators called the Research Exchange Programme. The candidate registers for Ph.D. and spends even amount of time at the Institute and with a partner research group abroad. Financial support is guaranteed at both ends. He may also obtain his Ph.D. from the partner research group abroad.

  • Part-time Programs (Link)

Professionals in the Hyderabad area are encouraged to enroll in the Graduate programs on a part-time basis. PG Students Status Program (PGSSP) allows professionals to take individual courses of their interest without needing to enroll in a degree program. The PGSS Programme provides an opportunity for professionals in the Hyderabad area to benefit from the advanced courses offered at the institute. The post-graduate status can be accorded to a professional on the basis of his or her academic and experience record. Once someone is awarded the PG status, he or she can take a maximum of two courses at the institute every semester. This provides him or her with the opportunity to acquire new knowledge in chosen areas without committing to a formal programme. The courses taken under the PGSSP scheme can count towards a formal degree from the institute, should the student join one of the full-time or part-time programmes subsequently.
