PhD in Computational Natural Sciences

About the Program

Students admitted to the program have to complete a course work followed by breadth and depth examinations apart from the thesis work. The expected duration is between 4 - 5yrs.

Duration

Around 5 years; typically all course work is finished in the first year (2 semesters) followed by research work for the thesis.

Eligibility

M.Sc in fundamental sciences, M.E/M Tech/B.E/B Tech in CS/IT/Biotech/BioInformatics/BioMed, MCA.

Admission Procedure

Admissions are mainly through Post Graduate Entrance Examiniation conductued some time between Feburary and April every academic year.

Curriculum

For the course component, there are (a) depth and (b) breadth requirements, and the student need to satisfy BOTH. The recommendations may differ from student to student since the students come from a varying backgrounds, for example MSc (Maths/statistics, Physics/Chemistry/Biology and their interfaces, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics) and BTech (CSE, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, other Engg. branches). The students are required to satisty the requirements for ALL streams listed below:

Breadth Courses:

For the Breadth requirement, there are TWO streams with the minimum credit requirements as listed below:

1.      Fundamental Sciences (8 Credits, typically two 4-credit courses)

2.      Tools and techniques (4 Credits, typically one 4-credit course)

Fundamental Sciences: these will be courses in area of “physics” or “chemistry” or “biology”. The courses counting towards breadth requirement should cover at least two of the above listed areas. Below is a list of courses that are suitable. The list can be amended based on the courses offered, by Program Coordinator who will liaise with Course Instructor to offer a 400-level course:

  1. SC3.101 - Introduction to biology
  2. SC4150 - Advanced molecular/bio-molecular architectures
  3. SC3.321 - Biomolecular structure, interaction and dynamics
  4. SC1.102 - Classical mechanics (H)
  5. SC1.101 - Electrodynamics (H)
  6. SCI331 - Thermodynamics and statistical mechanics
  7. SCI651 - Introduction to bioinformatics
  8. SC3.303 - Advanced bioinformatics
  9. SC4955 - Complex Systems-I
  10. SCI719 - Principles and Techniques of Instrumental Analysis
  11. SC1.203 - Quantum Mechanics
  12. SC2.202 - Organic Chemistry (H)

Tools and techniques: will have courses covering the areas of “applied mathematics (mathematical applications)”, “IT” and “computing”. Below is a list of courses that are suitable.

The list can be amended based on the courses offered.

  1. CS0.302 - Computing Tools
  2. Mathematical Methods in sciences
  3. CS1.404 - Optimization methods
  4. CS6.302 - Software Systems Development
  5. CS0.301 - Computer Problem Solving
  6. CS4.401 – Data Systems
  7. CS4.502 - Advances in Data Mining

Depth Courses:

Depth requirement is mandated so as to enable the student to gain mastery in the field related to thesis. For the depth requirement, the student will have to clear a minimum of 12 credits (typically, three 4-credit courses).  Considering the wide range of areas in science, it is not possible to specify the courses for all areas; the thesis advisor will certify courses as satisfying the depth requirement for his/her student. These may include courses listed in Breadth requirement.

Below is an indicative list of courses:

  1. Molecular Modeling
  2. SCI760 - Computer Aided Drug Design -
  3. SCI751 - Topics in Physics -
  4. SC2.401 - Topics in Nanosciences -
  5. Topics in Nanobiotechnology
