Program Name : M.Tech in Computational Linguistics

About the Program:

MTech (CL) is a course-work intensive two year program in which students of computer science background get opportunity to learn how to apply computational knowledge for natural language processing that includes Machine translation, Information extraction and retrieval and Speech Technology. The students do three semesters of course work. They start working for their MTech project in the third semester and devote the last semester entirely for the project.

Objectives:

The aim of the program is:

To introduce students to Computational Linguistics
To prepare them to work either in industry in the area of Natural Language Processing or take up research or higher studies.

Since Computational Linguistics belongs to an interdisciplinary area, the program puts equal emphasis on teaching subjects of both areas: Computer Science and Linguistics, along with their synthesis.

Advantages (for the student): The students will become proficient in the area of Natural Language Processing. They can either enter the field of language technology industry as system builders or take research as a career.

Eligibility:

BTech CS or any other branch of Engineering, MCA and Masters in Science or Mathematics.

Admission Process:

Through the PG entrance examination conducted by IIIT, Hyderabad

Academic Regulations (Highlights)

Credit Requirements:

Minimum credits required for graduation is 72 for student with CS background and 70 for student with non-CS background
Each semester, every student must register for at least 16 credits and at most 20 credits.
Out of 70-72, course credits are 54-56 and project credits are 16.
Every student must register for 42-44 core course credits in the first 3 semesters.
Every student must register for 12 credits of Elective courses in 2^nd and 3^rd semesters.

Project Work:

Every student has to register for 16 credits of project in their 3^rd and 4^th semesters with 4 and 12 credits respectively.

Academic Performance:

A student should complete the requirements with a minimum CGPA of 6.5 to receive the M.Tech. degree.

Residency Requirements:

Full-time students: Minimum of 4 semesters and maximum of 6 semesters.

Part-time students: Minimum of 4 semesters and maximum of 8 semesters.

Fees:

Assistantships are available which pay full tuition fee and a stipend. Students are expected to work in the project which is also a learning experience.
