The Andhra Pradesh State Council for Higher Education, Jawahar Knowledge Center, IIIT Hyderabad and Red Hat India are organizing a one-day seminar on Open Source in Education. The event will be held at the Seminar Hall at IIIT-Hyderabad, Gachibowli, Hyderabad on 27th June, 2005.

Open Source has emerged as a powerful knowledge-based movement that leverages the global reach of the Internet and a new approach to the issue of Intellectual Property Rights. Collaboration and community ownership of IPRs are the two tenets that govern the open source movement.

While the movement has its strongest roots in the world of software, with open source software like Linux and Apache being leading examples, it is also finding rapid acceptance in the world of content (PlanetMath, Wikipedia, Directory of Open Access Journals, Public Library of Science, Creative Commons etc), Biology (Cambia, Opensourcebio.org, BioPerl), Physics (Open Source Physics Education Project) and many other disciplines. Academia has been at the forefront of this movement that has long-term repercussions for the knowledge economy.

This seminar will examine the open source philosophy, how the open source development model works, how academic institutions can adopt open source to their advantage and an action agenda for open source in India. The event will be attended by vice chancellors of major universities in Hyderabad, heads of CSE departments and other key decision makers in academia.
