Activities 2005-2006


Objectives

The objective of establishing Outreach Division to further strengthen executive education, interface with industry, statutory bodies, professional societies and conduct of research focus workshops/seminars/conferences. Outreach Division has been established at IIIT, Hyderabad on 01 July 2004 and is at present fully operational.


Mission

Keeping in line with mission of IIIT, Outreach Division is assisting in further strengthening initiatives in the area of IT education, research and spreading awareness of Information Technology for Industry and Society.


Functions

The functioning of the Outreach Division is being reviewed at regular interval to see its utility in meeting the broad objective of IIIT. Any additional tasks/responsibility as well as modification of exiting role is being done in consultation with Director, IIIT by the Adviser. Overall responsibility of ensuring efficient functioning of the division rests with the Adviser, Outreach Division.


1. EXECUTIVE EDUCATION/CONFERENCES/SEMINARS/MEETINGS

- Programme on Cryptography and Network Security for teaching staff in various engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh from 27 Jun to 02 Jul 2005.

- Workshop on Wireless LAN Project by Prof UV Reddy and sharing experiences on 02 Jul 2005.

- Predictable Professional Performance (PPP) conducted by Dr Lynn Robert Carter, CMU, USA on 08 Jul 2005.

- Adviser, Outreach Division attended IJCAI-05 and interacted with IJCAI trustees at Edinburgh, UK from 30 Jul to 08 Aug 2005.

- Academic Industry Coordination Committee on 20 Aug 2005 at IIITH

- Press Conference on Robo-soccer winning team of IIITH on 05 Sep 2005

- ICON-2005 PC Meeting finalized OC on 10 Sep

- Adviser chaired Panel Discussion on ICT for Rural Development in their Annual Seminar on 14 Sep 2005 at NIRD Hyderabad

- 5th Distinguished Lecture by Prof UR Rao, ISRO, Bangalore on 29 Oct 2005 and IEEE Workshop on 'Launch Vehicle Tech' with speakers from ISRO and DRDO

- Inauguration of CSI Student Convention-2005 and Student Paper Contest. Delivered an invited talk in CIO/CTO Forum On "Challenges for India in Flat World" at IIITH on 10 and 11 Nov 2005

- SIGAI meeting for working out plans for IJCAI07 Indian participation, LAC-07 meeting at UOH on 11 Nov 2005

- e-Gov Awards Ceremony with Gen K V Krishna Rao as chief Guest. Coordinated Panel discussion on "ICT and Sarv Udaya" during CSI-2005 on 12 Nov 2005

- Invited Paper on 'Net-centric Warfare' in CDM Annual Seminar on 17-18 Nov

- Management of Software System and Development Workshop (MSSD) was conducted for 6 days (05- 10 Dec 05) during visit of Dr Lynn Carter. The Workshop was attended by 20 Software specialists from local industry including Microsoft, Computer Associate, CARE,ELICO,ECIL,CDAC,IEG and internal from MSIT and IIIT Hyderabad. This was very successful event and tested MSSD concept for launching initiative at MSIT/IIITH with CMU West and Prof Lynn Carter.

- IIIT hosted FSTTCS-2005 from 15 to 19 Dec 2005 with over 250 participants

- IIIT also hosted very successful conference COMADb-2005 from 20 to 22 Dec 2005 with over 300 delegates.

- Workshop on "Research Challenges in Digital Library" inaugurated by Raj Reddy on 30 Dec 2005

- IJCAI LAC-07 meeting for finalization of PCO for IJCAI-07 was held from 11 to 14 Jan 2006

- Excitement of Research for nearly 200 students was conducted on 25 and 26 Feb 2006

- R & D Showcase-06 demonstrating major IIIT Research Projects was held on 2and 3 Mar 2006, ended with a Panel discussion on "Research Challenges for India- Role of Education Institution"

- Inauguration of e-Sagu Research Centre by Minister of Agriculture, GoAP on 20 Mar 2006

- Press Conference on IJCAI-07 on 29 Apr 2006 was organized, where Dr Raj Reddy, Harish Mehta and Director IIIT participated.


Visits

Publications/Outreach assistance

- A book published by SAGE, India 'The State, IT and Development' edited with Prof Kenneth Keniston (MIT, USA) and Rohit Raj Mathur (ASCI) was released by Prof V Rajaraman on 11 Nov 2005. The book has had excellent review.

- R K Bagga, A V Subramanian "Command and Control Simulation, as a precursor to implementation of Network Centric Environment in Armed Forces"; 18 Nov 2005 CDM Seminar Proceeding.

- Avik Banerji, R K Bagga and D Santosh kumar "Information and Communication Technology for Education" E-Gov Seminar Proceedings.

- Assisted IIIT Faculty in getting Nominations from DRDO and other contacts for the short duration Executive Programmes in Building Science, Earthquake Engineering and IT for Power etc.

- As Advisory Committee guided smooth conduct of annual convention of Computer Society of India (CSI-2005) at Hyderabad after a gap of 10 yeas.

- A special Student Convention (CSI-2005 Student Convention) was planned--and implemented at IIIT-H with major events including Student Programming Contest, Student Paper Contest and important guest lectures by Prof D B Pathak, Prof V Rajaraman and Prof PVS Rao.

- Assisted in the following important technical conferences organized at IIIT by our faculty: FSTTCS-2005, COMADb-2005 and ACCV-2006

- Conduct of Two Distinguished Lectures during the year one by Mr Kiran Karnik and other by Prof U R Rao for benefit of students and faculty at IIITH. The lecture were very well attended.

- Excitement of Research was conducted in Feb 2006 for the benefit of over 250 students of local engineering colleges, with Guest Speaker including Dr Swamy Manohar and Lt. Gen. VJ Sundaram

- Two-day R&D Showcase was organized in March 2006 with a Panel Discussion by specialists on ‘Role of Research in Developing India’.

- A two-day workshop exclusively for IEEE/CSI Student Branches on ‘Launch Vehicle Technologies’ was organized with Prof NDR Sarma, inviting leading specialists from ISRO and DRDO incl. Prof UR Rao.

- Coordinated the visit of Chief Minister as well as the Chief Guest (Dr RA Mashelkar) for convocation in Aug 2005.

- Dept. of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) is considering setting up a Tech Entrepreneur Outreach Centre (TUC) under Dept. of Science and Technologies on-going programmes of TePP.

- CSI Hq. has approved formation of CSI-IIIT Hyderabad Students Branch from year 2005-06 with over 75 student members

- Plan to conduct a two-day seminar on 'Research Focus: New Model for Higher Technical Education' with key National specialists from Govt., Academia and Industry during June 2006 with a view to sharing IIIT, Hyderabad experience of research based institute of excellence and deemed university.
